Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington (1899-1974) was an African American composer, pianist and leader of the most important "big band" in the U.S. Although best known for 2,000 jazz works, Ellington also composed classical music for orchestra, chamber ensemble and solo piano. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra has recorded his "Harlem" and Suite from "the River" on CDs released by the U.K. record label Chandos.
