William Grant Still (1895-1978)

23704 William Grant Still (1895-1978) http://chevalierdesaintgeorges.homestead.com/Still.html William Grant Still (1895-1978 was an African American composer and jazz arranger who was born in Mississippi and grew up in Arkansas. He studied music at Oberlin College and with tutors. Still was an oboist and a jazz arranger before he switched to classical music in the late 1920s. The 1931 premiere of his "Afro-American Symphony" led to many concerts and recordings of his 150 classical works. Black Arts and Humanities
