Ignatius Sancho was born on a British slave ship sailing from West Africa to the Spanish West Indies. His parents did not survive the voyage, so he was made a house slave in England at about three years of age. His owners were harsh, but a neighbor lent him books and employed him after he ran away. A bequest allowed Sancho to buy a little shop in London. He became both an author and a composer of songs and dances.
